In 2003, the Council of the American Psychosomatic Society recommended
that a committee of past officers and council members be formed. The
original concept was that this group of previous leaders of the Society
could provide important perspectives about many relevant issues, including
the current state and direction of the Society, its potential future
goals, how it might relate to other professional groups. In its first
years, the Past Leaders Committee has requested that there be at least
one Past Leader on the Program Committee, encouraged Past Leaders to
participate on each of the APS committees, identified Past Leaders to
serve as mentors to the Psychosomatic Medicine Interest Groups, and provided
feedback and consultation to the Council and Executive Committee on a
number of matters including the bylaws, activities at the annual meeting,
the journal and activities with other societies. The Past Leaders Committee
meets at a dinner during the Annual Meeting, convenes by conference call
at least twice each year, and engages in other business, such as nominating
individuals for APS awards, or communicating about specific activities
by email and use of the APS website.
